MICIVIH Opens Storefront on the Internet

April 28, 1997 -- The UN/OAS Civilian Observer Mission in Haiti (MICIVIH) has set up a site on the Internet that is full of information about human rights conditions in Haiti, and tells of the many initiatives that have been developed by the international organization to promote respect for human rights.

Established in 1993 at the request of President Aristide and with the agreement of the de facto government led then by Prime Minister Marc Bazin, MICIVIH witnessed two hasty evacuations in 1993 and 1994, a rapid expansion followed by reduction in size, as well as a change in mandate. The Mission is scheduled to end by the end of July.

Meanwhile, visitors to MICIVIH's site can access reports, press statements and some multimedia files that provide much valuable information on developments in the area of judicial, police, and penal reforms.
